Living Faith Through Divine Unity
There’s something profoundly grounding about contemplating the Oneness of God—Tawheed. It’s more than theology; it’s the very lens through which a believer sees the world. In my own journey as a Muslim, understanding this core concept has helped me realign my priorities, ease my worries, and strengthen my connection with Allah ﷻ. And one of the most profound voices in Islamic history who clarified this concept is Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah.
Who Was Ibn Taymiyyah?
Ibn Taymiyyah (d. 1328 CE) was a renowned Sunni scholar, jurist, and theologian of the Hanbali school. Known for his sharp intellect and deep piety, he lived in a time of great political upheaval and spiritual confusion. Yet, amid this chaos, he devoted his life to re-centering Islam around what he believed to be its pure essence: the worship of Allah alone, without intermediaries or innovations.
His writings on Tawheed—the Oneness of God—weren’t just philosophical arguments. They were calls to spiritual clarity and inner reform.
Tawheed According to Ibn Taymiyyah
Ibn Taymiyyah broke down Tawheed into three interconnected dimensions:
- Tawheed al-Ruboobiyyah – the belief that Allah alone is the Creator, Sustainer, and Controller of everything.
- Tawheed al-Uloohiyyah – the exclusive right of Allah to be worshipped.
- Tawheed al-Asma wa Sifaat – affirming Allah’s names and attributes as revealed in the Qur’an and Sunnah, without distortion or denial.
This framework helped me understand that Tawheed is not just an abstract idea. It is the foundation of worship, the heart of the Qur’an’s message, and the first call of every prophet. Ibn Taymiyyah wrote:
“Whoever does not worship Allah alone has not believed in His Lordship in the complete sense.”
This deeply challenged me. Was I truly giving Allah the exclusive devotion He deserves? Or were my fears, my hopes, even my attachments sometimes directed elsewhere?
The Call to Purify Worship
In Al-‘Uboodiyyah (Servitude), Ibn Taymiyyah explains that every human is a servant—either to Allah or to something else. Whether it’s money, status, other people, or even ourselves—anything we put above Allah becomes an idol of the heart.
Reading his work made me pause. I realized that even good things—family, success, service—can subtly replace the singular place of Allah in our lives. Ibn Taymiyyah didn’t just call for outward adherence to Islamic law; he called for the purification of the heart.
He wrote:
“True freedom lies in being a slave only to Allah.”
That line hit me hard. How many of us are searching for freedom in the wrong places? Ibn Taymiyyah’s message was simple: Return to Allah, the One. Live for Him, and everything else will fall into place.
Tawheed Brings Tranquility
One of the most beautiful fruits of understanding Tawheed—something Ibn Taymiyyah emphasized—is inner peace.
When we believe that only Allah has ultimate control, we stop fearing people’s opinions. we know that only He provides, we stop obsessing over the future. When we worship Him alone, we find a kind of clarity and focus that no worldly pursuit can offer.
Ibn Taymiyyah once said:
“What can my enemies do to me? My paradise is in my heart. If they imprison me, it is a retreat. If they kill me, it is martyrdom. If they expel me, it is a journey for the sake of Allah.”
That level of trust can only come from someone whose heart is firmly anchored in Tawheed.
A Personal Reflection
For years, I sought peace in productivity, people, and achievements. But only when I returned to the Oneness of Allah—reflecting on His names, trusting His plan, and purifying my intentions—did I begin to taste the tranquility I was searching for.
Ibn Taymiyyah’s writings reminded me that Tawheed is not just theology to study, but a lifestyle to embody. It’s about worshipping Allah in every breath, trusting Him in every trial, and loving Him above all else.
Final Thoughts: A Call to Center Our Lives Around Allah
In a world full of distractions, the message of Ibn Taymiyyah is more relevant than ever. His insistence on worshipping Allah alone—without partners, without intermediaries, and without innovation—is not a harsh call to rigidity, but a liberating return to what truly matters.
