Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag was looking to add another striker to his roster this summer and tipped Hojlund after seeing him score 10 goals during his debut campaign with Atalanta in Serie A last season.
Atalanta will receive an initial sum of PS64m from Manchester United with add-ons. United will pay an eye-watering sum to acquire Hojlund, going against their earlier policy of paying no more than 60 million per player.
1. Atalanta accept?72m deal
Manchester United have reached an agreement in principle with Atalanta for Rasmus Hojlund. The 20-year-old striker joined Atalanta from Sturm Graz last summer, scoring 10 goals in 34 appearances for them during Serie A play. Hojlund made his senior international debut for Denmark this season and is seen as an effective one-on-one threat.
Atalanta initially sought an initial fee of around PS77 Million for Hojlund. Following negotiations, their demands were significantly lowered and United were able to stay within their budget while signing Hojlund on a five-year contract.
Erik ten Hag is set to make Hojlund his third signing of this transfer window after Mason Mount and Andre Onana, with United also eyeing Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat from Fiorentina as potential midfield reinforcements pending any departures of Fred, Scott McTominay or Donny van de Beek.

2. Hojlund agrees?5-year deal
Rasmus Hojlund looks set to move to Manchester United from Atalanta in an eye-watering PS72m transfer deal, having long been a fan of United since childhood. His move represents an opportunity to showcase his talents on Europe’s premier stage.
Danish striker Rasmus Korp began his senior career with Copenhagen before making his Sturm Graz debut in 2020 and impressing enough last season to earn him a move to Atalanta, where he has scored 10 goals in 34 appearances this term – scoring one every other game!
Erik ten Hag has made signing Hojlund his top priority this summer and already signed midfielder Mason Mount from Chelsea and goalkeeper Andre Onana from Inter Milan. Hojlund should complete his move in time for United’s Premier League opener against Wolves on August 14. His fee will include an initial payment of PS64m with possible add-ons.

3. United pay?64m upfront
Erik ten Hag was keen on signing an experienced No. 9 as part of his attacking options at Old Trafford this season, even while heavily relying on Marcus Rashford to score. Jadon Sancho remains United’s sole other option up front, however his inability to capitalize on any opportunities presented him during Thursday’s 2-0 friendly defeat against Real Madrid was enough evidence that more reliability is needed up front.
Hojlund will cost Manchester United an upfront transfer fee of PS72m with add-on costs estimated at PS8m. He is expected to undergo medical at Carrington soon and could even play in their pre-season friendlies against Lens and Athletic Bilbao next weekend in Dublin.
4. Add-ons
After it became evident that Tottenham’s Harry Kane would be difficult to acquire, United turned their focus towards Hojlund. Parallel talks were conducted with Eintracht Frankfurt’s Randal Kolo Muani and Ajax’s Mohammed Kudus; however, Hojlund always stood out as their top choice.
United will pay an initial PS64m plus potential add-on fees of PS8m in order to secure the services of young striker, with his five-year contract running until 2028.
Hojlund will join Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Antony Martial as part of United’s attack. United believe their coaching can shape Hojlund into one of Europe’s lethal strikers; hopefully by next week he can take part in Red Devils friendlies against Lens and Athletic Bilbao.
5. Medical
Hojlund will bring United’s summer spending close to PS180m; however, departures will need to balance the books.
Erik ten Hag identified signing Hojlund as one of his top priorities before the transfer window began, after being dissuaded from bidding for Tottenham’s Harry Kane.
Last season, 20-year-old Stefano Di Carlo proved his quality in Serie A by scoring 10 times in 34 appearances and also making an impressionful showing in Denmark’s Euro 2024 qualifiers. Now expected at Carrington training ground within 48 hours to undergo medical tests and finalise his move he will join up with the squad ahead of their pre-season friendlies against Lens and Athletic Bilbao.
